The SVA Veteran Coalition of Arts & Calumet Gallery present “DECLASSIFIED: En Avant,” opening March 3rd

A couple years ago I wrote about “DECLASSIFIED: A Portrait of the Veteran as a Young Artist,” an exhibition in the Photography Department that I helped curate along with several members of the SVA Veterans Coalition of Arts (SVA-VCA). Since then, I’ve posted several updates on subsequent exhibitions the SVA-VCA has organized under the “DECLASSIFIED” banner. Late last week, I learned that their next show will open on March 3rd for a weeklong run in the Calumet Gallery on 22nd Street in New York. “DECLASSIFIED: En Avant” was curated by military veterans and SVA students Rebecca Storer and Kylene Kasch, and will feature works by Joel Chapman, Michael Schmidt, Hector Rene, Chris Miller, Brandon Hall, and Frankie Torres.

The organizers are also pre-selling a catalog to help defray some of the costs of staging the show. This is the first time that one of the “DECLASSIFIED” exhibitions will have a printed catalog to accompany the works on display. The GoFundMe page for the project includes the following description:

The catalogue will be designed by VCA member Chris Miller, and feature a page about all eight of the showing artists. It will include statements by the show curators, Rebecca Storer and Kylene Kasch, and be printed in a limited edition of 100. In addition each one will be signed by all included artists and numbered.

Here’s the press release for “DECLASSIFIED: En Avant,” followed by images of works by the artists in the show.

For immediate release:

On behalf of SVA’s Veteran Coalition of Arts & Calumet Gallery we would like to invite you to DECLASSIFIED: En Avant.”

Please join us at our Artists’ Reception on Monday, 3 March 2014 at 5:30 pm at Calumet Gallery, 2nd Floor, 22 W. 22nd Street, New York, NY 10010. The exhibition will be on view from Monday, 3 March to Friday, 7 March.

The School of Visual Arts has a small community of veteran students who attend on scholarship under the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. The Veteran Coalition of Arts is a collective of veteran-artists whose work reflects personal experiences as a way to shape their artistic practices.

As a community, VCA strives to provide a supportive environment in order to foster the most fluid transition from the uniformity of the military to a shared dialogue about the military influence, causes and effects of war, and the dichotomy of being a contemporary veteran and artist in a post 9/11 culture.

This exhibition is an opportunity to showcase a common theme found in many returning veterans whose artwork reflects a desire for change from the rigidness of military life and the personal evolution that comes from art making.

Military Veterans Rebecca Storer & Kylene Kasch will curate the exhibition with project advisement from Vietnam Veteran, W.M. Hunt. This years Artists will include: Joel Chapman, Michael Schmidt, Hector Rene, Chris Miller, Brandon Hall, and Frankie Torres.

Funding for this exhibition is provided by SVA, VCA, and Calumet. Additional support is always welcomed. Interest in the pre-purchasing of a limited edition show catalogue, or general support should be forwarded to http://www.gofundme.com/DECLASSIFIED
