Photos from the Priene Hali benefit sale and the Minder rug show at PS 290

Earlier this month, VCS faculty member Peter Hristoff sent out an update on some of the recent events he’s coordinated in New York with the Priene Hali rug workshop. Here’s what he had to say:

Dear Friends,

November was a busy month for Priene Hali, the rug weaving studio of Gullubahce, Turkey.

Students from Public School 290 of Manhattan exhibited Minder rugs they designed – a project funded by the American Turkish Society’s curriculum grant promoting Turkish culture in the US. Rugs designed by the Visual and Critical Study Department students of the School of Visual Arts are currently being exhibited on the 4th floor of SVA’s West 21 Street building. And last Friday night was the “Benefit Sale” in support of Priene Hali at SVA’s Fine Arts Building. Eighty-six artists participated and approximately sixty works sold. The remaining pieces will be presented at a similar benefit in Turkey next Spring. The event was hosted by Fine Arts Department Chair Suzanne Anker; refreshments and sweets offered and served by “A La Turka” restaurant (better baklava than I recently had in Istanbul!) and Sole Grano. The American Turkish Society and the Moon and Stars Project worked tirelessly to support and promote this event. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make the sale a huge success; to the Benefit committee; to Jonathas Nazareth for the pro-bono design work; to VCS and Art History Department Chair Tom Huhn for his on-going support; to my indispensable installation crew and assistants and to all of the artists who donated their work and their collectors! The proceeds will be used to buy wool and keep the studio going during the winter months.

These recent events have generated a great deal of interest in Priene Hali and the weavers look forward to working on projects with new partners. Best wishes for the holidays. We’ll be in touch in 2013.

Sincerely,
Peter Hristoff
and Priene Hali
