Recently, VCS faculty member Luca Buvoli was selected as a recipient of the Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Award. Here in the VCS program, Luca teaches a fourth-year studio class in which he leads critiques with students as they prepare their final projects for the senior thesis show that’s held at SVA each January. Last year, I wrote a post about Luca outdoor installation Flight Simulator Banners With Contrail (Inverted Helix) – Project for Utopia Matters, which was on view at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. (You can read that post here.)
Luca provided me with this brief description of the award: “The Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Award is a substantial grant to encourage, and in recognition of, creative contributions in the arts. This grant/award is given every few years to artists whose work best embodies the rigorous and independent ethos of Barnett Newman. Previous recipients include Rebecca Horn (2004), Judy Pfaff (2006), and Larry Poons (2010).”
On behalf of everyone in the VCS program, I’d like to congratulate Luca for his receipt of this rare and prestigious award.
