Welcome to SVA!
If you seek a truly multi-disciplinary studio-based education at one of the premier art schools in the United States, you’ll want to know more about the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual & Critical Studies at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. This interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program marks a significant addition to SVA’s traditional focus on studio-based majors such as illustration, graphic design, film, photography, fine arts, etc. Indeed, Visual & Critical Studies was designed particularly to engage and challenge students in areas beyond a single medium of artistic expression and creation.
We have found that an increasing number of students want to learn and experience a wide range of media, studio practices, and techniques. So too have we found that because of our rapidly expanding visual culture there is an increasing urgency to educate our students about all aspects of visual experience. Visual & Critical Studies is a program developed in response to the increasing number of artists and students who work in multiple artistic mediums. Therefore, instead of initiating students into a singular artistic practice, Visual & Critical Studies allows them to shape their own multi-dimensional, integrated art education through a unique, guided combination of varied studio courses along with academic offerings which focus on a corresponding exploration of the myriad forms and venues of contemporary visual life. I believe it promises an especially dynamic course of study and studio practice.
