Artist’s Journal at the Met
Here’s a collection of images from Peter Hristoff, showing students in The Artist’s Journal during several visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art last semester. While they were there, they learned about various art historical styles, materials, and techniques from members of the Met’s staff, and spent time sketching in some of the museum’s galleries (including the Greek and Roman Art collection, the Islamic Art collection, the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas rooms, and the Henry R. Luce Center for the Study of American Art).
Peter also sent along the following comments from two students in the class about their time at the Met:
Chaerin Ahn: “It was wonderful to visit the Met so regularly to draw and to hear from its staff their perspectives on various parts of the museum’s collection. As grand, impressive, and beautiful as many of the objects and galleries already are, the class did something special by helping create a more personal connection to the images and the objects. I felt fortunate to have the class, and hope more people get to have similar experiences at the Met!”
Benjamin Ryan Yankowy: “Peter taking us to the MET was a perfect way to spend one part of a class. The bi-weekly trips were an excellent exercise in starting to make a piece. Drawing from the MET is both an analytical study and creative study, and I have learned more about my process than ever before. My only regret is that the class is over and that more art students can’t experience what I have.”
