VCS faculty member (and 2011 alumna) Shannon Broder and her business Broderpress were the subject of a profile last week in House Beautiful. The article and video discuss Shannon’s career as a silkscreen printer, and the Broderpress line of screenprinted animal pillows. Here’s a brief excerpt:
From the start of her time at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, to when she graduated in 2011 and again in 2016 (that time around with a Masters of Fine Arts), Shannon always felt passionately about silkscreen printing.
“I love the process of it. You put emulsion on the screen, you expose it to light, you get a stencil and you print. The fact that I can use this process and create something with it is incredible,” she says. Though Shannon opened her Etsy shop in 2009, it wasn’t until 2013 that her business took off. She decided to host a flash sale on custom pet pillows, and in five hours, she sold 500. That’s when she realized all that Broderpress could be.
