An open call for submissions to The Nasty Women Art Exhibition, a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood next month at The Knockdown Center
Earlier this week, VCS faculty member Peter Hristoff forwarded us the following open call for The Nasty Women Art Exhibition, a show to benefit Planned Parenthood that will take place at The Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens next month:
Nasty Women Art Exhibition, Jan 12-15, 2017 | The Knockdown Center, Maspeth, Queens, NYC
Calling All Nasty Women Artists
This is a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. It also serves as a fundraiser to support organizations defending these rights and to be a platform for organization before the Trump Presidential Inauguration in January.
About The Project
Started by Roxanne Jackson and Jessamyn Fiore with a facebook post that read:
Hello female artists/curators! Lets organize a NASTY WOMEN group show!!! Who’s interested???
The massive response has taken this call to arms into building an ever-expanding network of Nasty Women Artists & Art Organizers that will culminate in multiple exhibitions.
Below are details for One Iteration of the Nasty Women exhibition but we want others to occur in other cities, in multiple venues, organized locally but all connected at our website nastywomenexhibition.org
We welcome anyone who identifies with being a Nasty Woman and want this exhibition to include a spectacular diverse rainbow of Nasty Women so please please please spread the word!
WHO DO WE WANT INVOLVED?
Nasty Women Artists of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender or non-gender identifications, economic backgrounds, immigrants and non-immigrants…
EVERY ONE OF YOU NASTY WOMEN, LET’S DO THIS!!!
THIS EXHIBITION IS COMPLETELY INCLUSIVE
Because of the huge amount of interest already generated we have decided this exhibition will be completely INCLUSIVE. If you follow the submission guidelines your work will be featured in the exhibition. Our curatorial team will coordinate with you and facilitate its presentation – but no work will be rejected UNLESS IT DOES NOT MEET THE SUBMISSION CRITERIA BELOW.
If you are not sure whether or not your work does meet the below criteria, please shoot us a message and we will be in touch!
When: January 12 -15, 2017
Where: Knockdown Center, Maspeth, Queens, NYC
Install: JAN 9 – 11
Opening: JAN 12
Closing: JAN 15
OTHER VENUES: NASTY WOMEN ART EXHIBITIONS should happen in multiple venues throughout the country – please see OTHER VENUES section if you want to organize one!
THIS EXHIBITION IS A FUNDRAISER
The works in this exhibition will be available for sale – 100% of the sale will go to Planned Parenthood (other venues can choose to support other organizations).
We ask you price your work between $10 – $100. We want to keep the prices very affordable so that many many people in attendance feel they are able to purchase one or multiple pieces in support of Planned Parenthood.
IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO SELL YOUR WORK we will still accept it because we understand how valuable it is to show your work as part in solidarity with other Nasty Women. We will mark your work NFS, however we ask that you then either:
- donate a second work that can be sold
- make a donation yourself to Planned Parenthood
In the huge Knockdown Center main space we will construct ten 3D letters approximately twelve feet high each to spell out NASTY WOMEN. They will be framed out with wood and covered with a strong plastic mesh from which the artworks will be hung- basically these letters serve as our walls for the exhibition, every work will be hung off or installed in/on these forms. The letters will dramatically run the length of the space creating a NASTY WOMEN monument.
In this way each work will represent its own unique voice while being unified by the overall installation. It is the hope that this installation will create a strong visual statement of solidarity. We will soon have a rendered image of what these letters in the space will look like so you can completely envision the show.
ALL MEDIUMS WELCOME:
So that there is enough room for each artist to show we ask that your work be no larger than 12 inches in any direction. It can be smaller, it can be an odd shaped, it can be 3D, but no larger than 12 inches.
2D & 3D WORK (included painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc.):
– Make sure it is no larger 12 inch x 12 inches in any direction
We would like to include video for those of you who are video artists – we will either have small monitors or rear projection within the letters. Please be aware that depending on how many video entries we receive we may have to loop multiple works on one monitor/projection. We will of course provide the necessary information to the audience about authorship of each piece.
Because of the large amount of those participating sound most likely will be presented on headphones. But please contact curatorial team to discuss specifics if you have alternate ideas.
We welcome writers and text artists to participate!!!! You can choose whichever medium above to best convey your work and follow those guidelines.
