Opening Reception: Thursday, February 11, 6-8pm
CURATED BY PETER HRISTOFF
133 WEST 21 STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10011
The Artist’s Journal presents paintings based on systems, investigations of personal iconography, color theory and narrative. The scale of the work (all under 12 inches on any side) gives these paintings an object-like, devotional quality similar to Eastern European religious icons, Mexican retablos (symbolic, allegorical and spiritual works venerating saints) and ex-votos (devotional paintings that offer thanks). Their size challenges the traditional art school dictate of “going bigger,” believing that working small can be equally engaging. All participating artists are current undergraduate students in the Department of Visual and Critical Studies or Fine Arts at SVA.
