VHD-1010 / VHD-1015

Reading, Thinking, Writing I and II

Two semesters: 3 humanities and sciences credits per semester
The first part of this two-semester course will emphasize writing and critical thinking through the study of literature. The first goal is for students to express themselves clearly, critically and thoughtfully, using language. The second goal is for students to explore writing as a personal process and as an artist’s tool. We will study works from authors such as Mary Shelley, Zora Neale Hurston, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jorge Luis Borges. During the second semester students will further develop their writing and critical thinking skills. Texts include premodern works from the Western canon, along with more contemporary, experimental and non-Western literature.
